The ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan express serious concern over the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and extend their deepest sympathies to the people all over the world who have been affected by the disease. They also commend the tireless efforts and significant contribution of organizations and individuals in controlling the spread of the virus and in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

WE, the Heads of State/Government of the Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, held the Special ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Summit on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) via video conference on 14 April 2020. The Summit was chaired by H.E. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of Viet Nam, in his capacity as the Chair of ASEAN.
DEEPLY CONCERNED about the unprecedented and severe challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the well-being, livelihood, and safety of our peoples and its adverse impact on the socio-economic development of our respective countries and the world at large.

Policy Brief on the Economic Impact of COVID-19 Outbreak on ASEAN released
ASEAN Policy Brief – April 2020_FINAL-1Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic on 11 March 2020, lives have been upended and economic activities disrupted around the world. ASEAN is not spared with rising confirmed cases in all ten Member States.
ASEAN Member States have rolled out measures to contain and counter the impact of the outbreak, including the economic impact. Collectively, the region has also taken some steps and continues to discuss ways to address this unprecedented challenge.
This issue of the ASEAN Policy Brief looks at the economic impact of COVID-19 outbreak on ASEAN, responses from ASEAN and its Member States, and offers policy recommendations.

RECALLING the spirit in which the ASEAN Founding fathers gathered in Bangkok in 1967 to create an organisation that would help bring about a Southeast Asian region of peace, freedom and prosperity for our people.
